Description

When tragedy strikes, Deos love of soccer is all he has left. Can he use that gift to find hope once more?

Just down the road from their families, Deo and his friends play soccer in the dusty fields of Zimbabwe, cheered on by Deos older brother, Innocent. It is a day like any other ..until the soldiers arrive and Deo and Innocent are forced to run for their lives, fleeing the wreckage of their village for the distant promise of safe haven. Along the way, they face the prejudice and poverty that await refugees everywhere, and must rely on the kindness of people they meet to make it through.

Relevant, timely, and accessibly written, Now Is the Time For Running is a staggering story of survival that follows Deo and his mentally handicapped older brother on a transformative journey that will stick with readers long after the last page.

As I read on it became more dark cause the soldiers came into Zimbabwe. After the soldiers came they tried to kill everyone. While Deo and his brother hide from the soldiers they try to secretly leave their village. His brother convinced him to go back into the village and get his'BIx Box’. It's a box full of all his prized possessions. Along with a soccer ball that is full of cash. Deo and his brother are trying to find their way to South Africa. So they can work, go back to school. But most importantly they want to find their dad. They eventually found South Africa and found a job. But they realize that they are getting paid way less than they should and get fired. Now that they are homeless Deo now lives on the streets. One day Deo was playing soccer in the grass and a man saw the talent he had. He took Deo into an A soccer club called The Kids of Cape Town. It gives kids the opportunity to compete in the World Cup, gives them food and shelter. Eventually, over a year and a half, Deo has worked hard and their team wins the Street World Cup.
I liked the book mostly because it's somewhat about soccer and I like soccer. It's like a mystery and suspense. It's really good when they try and get to South Africa because it takes them a lot of time and try. But through perseverance, they finally made it to South Africa. And Deo got to accomplish his dreams by playing soccer for a big team and winning. That shows to never give up.
